Berlusconi, along with Merkel, said that he could be an intermediary between Putin and Ukraine.
ROME, September 7 – RIA Novosti. Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi leader declarationHe said he could act as a mediator to resolve the conflict in Ukraine with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“I think Merkel can try to mediate with me or with (Russian President Vladimir – ed.) Putin, I can try to persuade him,” he said in the broadcast of the Rai1 TV channel.
Speaking of the sanctions against Russia, Berlusconi expressed “sadness and disappointment” that Moscow strengthened “China’s communist totalitarianism” instead of getting closer to the European Union.
The former prime minister stressed that he did not see Russia experiencing economic losses due to the sanctions.
“It seems to me that it is absolutely capable of resisting sanctions and gas price ceilings,” said Berlusconi.
In early April, Berlusconi said he was disappointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions regarding the events in Ukraine.
“I am deeply disappointed and saddened by the behavior of Vladimir Putin, who assumes a great responsibility in front of the whole world,” he said at a party event in Rome.
