The UAE reaffirmed its commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance to Somalia to support the millions of people affected by the drought, emphasizing the need to improve the overall situation in Somalia and work with the Somali government on priorities, including the terrorist threat of al- Shabaab and the worsening humanitarian and climate crises.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of State to the United Nations, Amira Al-Hafeit, in a statement presented yesterday before the United Nations Security Council, called for the intensification of efforts to achieve security and stability in Somalia and allow the government to fulfill the your responsibilities. Amid the complex challenges it faces in meeting the aspirations of the people, Somalia is building a stable state that enjoys peace and prosperity.
“It’s time to make tangible progress on the overall situation in Somalia, working closely with leaders on priorities,” he said.
In a statement, Al-Hafeit said the Security Council meeting is an opportunity to send a clear message to the Somali people that the Council will always stand by their side and support them in their march towards security and stability.
“I want to focus on two important aspects: the continuing terrorist threat from al-Shabaab and the acute humanitarian and climate crisis,” he said.
The people of Somalia and all peoples in the Horn of Africa region face violent acts of terrorism by al-Shabaab as this terrorist group continues to harm civilians, destroy key infrastructure and undermine economic opportunities for national and regional governments, and our concern grows as al-Shabaab continues to use advanced technology to obtain its criminal activities, hide sources of funding and expand its sphere of influence.
He noted that developments require the Security Council to remain united in its determination to address the transnational threats posed by Al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups to international peace and security, including adopting the necessary regulatory framework to prevent these groups from gaining access. He reaffirmed the UAE’s willingness to continue its commitment to working with regional and international actors to support Somalia in its fight against terrorism.
Amira Al-Hafiti highlighted that the humanitarian situation of the Somali people is not hidden from the Security Council, where all UN agencies painted a gloomy picture of their humanitarian situation and warned of the risk of famine, noting that Somalia is currently . experiencing the worst drought in its history, affecting almost 50% of the population, and more than 6 million Somalis suffer from a lack of water.
He said: “There is no way these conditions can be left as they are. These growing and worrying crises require urgent attention from the international community and require a doubling of humanitarian aid and support from the Somali government to contribute to the relief of vulnerable communities. about the effects of drought across the country.
He emphasized the UAE’s desire to know more about the recent visit of Martin Griffiths, head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, to Somalia and any recommendations he can share to improve the humanitarian situation there.
He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to continue providing humanitarian aid to the Somali people, noting that the country has sent around 2,870 tonnes of aid since the beginning of the year to help millions of people affected by the drought.
He said: “As the international community works to respond to the challenges posed by climate change, we must pay special attention to terrorist groups, including al-Shabaab, who are using the drought crisis to further their goals. Recent UN reports have confirmed that this group has engaged in exploiting droughts and other emergency crises to its advantage, either by blackmailing local communities or using propaganda to expand its influence and mobilize support through deceptive means.
Al-Hafeit expressed the state’s sympathy and condolences to the families of victims of the terrorist attack on a convoy of vehicles in the Hiran region.
