Kiriyenko: The restoration of Saur-Mogila was financed from the special fund of the President of Russia
SNOW (DPR), September 9 – RIA Novosti. The First Deputy Head of the Kremlin Administration, Sergei Kiriyenko, said that the restoration of the memorial complex in Saur-Mogila in Donbass was financed from a special fund of the President of Russia.
The memorial complex began to be restored this year at the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Thursday, September 8, the Eternal Flame was lit atop the monument for the first time since 2014.
The monument on the Saur-Mogila mound was solemnly opened in 1967, it is located near the town of Snezhnoye in the DPR, not far from the border with Russia. In 1943, fierce battles were fought in these places for the liberation of Donbass from the Nazi invaders.
In August 2014, the monument was badly damaged due to clashes between Ukrainian troops and local militia. In particular, a nine-metre-high cast-iron statuette of a victorious Soviet soldier and a 36-metre-tall reinforced concrete obelisk with granite linings that stood behind him collapsed.
