Death toll rises to 40 in gas explosion in Havana Saratoga

MEXICO CITY, May 10 – RIA Novosti. The Cuban Ministry of Health said that forty people died in the gas explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana, 18 of them were hospitalized, and six of them were in critical condition.

The Ministry’s Telegram channel said, “As of May 9, 18:30, 94 people were injured, 18 were hospitalized, 36 patients were discharged, 40 people died.”

Two of the six victims in critical condition in hospitals are children. In total, five minors were hospitalized.

A gas explosion occurred Friday morning at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana. The blast wave destroyed the facade of the building up to the fifth floor, 17 neighboring buildings were damaged, including the school. A preliminary version of what is happening is a leak and explosion of household gas from a fill tank. Authorities described the incident as an accident.
